A better future has to start today

We believe that doing right by the ocean is not a choice – it’s the only way forward. Complacency has no place in ensuring that future generations inherit a world that they can continue to enjoy and prosper from in the same way that those before them have.

Origins of the Trust

Seed funding raised from several benefactors enabled the Trust’s establishment. In 2006, the trust obtained charitable status as defined by the Charitable Trust Act 1957. We are approved by Inland Revenue for the purposes of sections KC 5, DB 32 and DV 11 of the Income Tax Act 2004.

How we make an impact

Stewardship

Father and son fishing

With the sharing of knowledge, we aim to lead and inspire others in embracing the values of kaitiakitanga.

Protecting Our Fisheries

Through shared responsibility and accountability, we can collectively maintain sustainable practices for the benefit of all.

A Focus on Community

Together we can make a difference and ensure that NZ leads the way in maintaining healthy, sustainable fisheries today, and tomorrow.

Purpose of the Trust

  • Achieve “more fish in the water” through promoting excellence in sustainable management.
  • Promote co-operation between all stakeholders in shared fisheries.
  • Foster community guardianship over resources. In the Guardians of the Sea context this means: local initiatives by communities to better manage seafood resources.

Our Legacy

We know that a better future for our oceans starts with the changes that we make today. Through education and advocacy for positive action, we aim to ensure that fish as a resource is respected and enhanced, not only for ourselves, but for future generations so that they too may grow up to enjoy the social and cultural joys of fishing.

With your help, we can leave a legacy we’re proud of.
